John Trickett

When professional football player, John Trickett moved to Torquay and started to paint in his early twenties, he would never have imagined that this would lead to him becoming one of the most important dog painters of our era.

Born in Sheffield, he was an only child who remembers his childhood fondly. Educated at Winteringham Grammar, John’s greatest ambition to play football was realised when he played firstly for his local town in Grimsby, then professionally for Torquay. Whilst in Torquay, John, who had always had an interest in painting started to paint portraits, landscapes and seascapes. Struggling to earn a living, he returned to his home town of Grimsby where he took a position as a fork lift truck driver and continued to paint in his spare time. Once his portfolio had grown, he held an exhibition in his local library which was a great success; this spurred him to find someone to promote his work. On seeing an advertisement in a magazine, John contacted a gallery and travelled to meet them with a couple of originals under his arm. Being so impressed with his work they bought the originals and so one of the longest partnerships in the business of artist and publisher began.

John’s beautiful natural ability to create the most stunning works of art is immeasurable. Inspired by the Masters such as Rembrandt and Caravaggio, John has always strived to excel. His paintings of black Labradors were once described by the Shooting Times as some of the finest in the world. His time spent studying scenery and taking photographic references of his subjects for action and composition, coupled with his natural self taught ability to paint allow him to create the most realistic landscapes, seascapes, country sports and wildlife paintings. The first painting published after his work was a Springer Spaniel in the snow. His publishing portfolio has expanded to over 300 images on prints and cards. Danbury Mint have also published many editions after Johns work throughout his career.

A family man, John Trickett lives in Nottinghamshire with his partner and their cats. His three children and grandson all play a major part in his life. Content with his existence, John prefers not to sit in the spotlight - he doesn’t see himself as a famous man, he just loves to create pictures.

John’s paintings and prints hang in houses all over the world and he continues to be one of the greatest dog painters of our time. Quite an achievement.
