Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was among the most influential American artists to appear in the post-war period.
Rather than drawing on subjective emotions or idealised arguments for abstraction which had steered the direction of art in the years preceding, Warhol’s art embraced popular culture and commercial processes for their cold and unemotional air. Printmaking, and in particular the screenprinting process became central to his work through which he filtered images of mass produced products and images from the media, particularly images of celebrity and mortality. Although Warhol’s renowned screenprinted paintings and prints, such as his portraits of the rich and famous, have become his defining work, he also worked extensively in photography, film and advertising.
